Andre Onana praises the Slovenian: Samir Handanovic is a captain and a leader who is always ready to help
Inter qualified for the Champions League eighth round on Wednesday from a group that also includes Bayern and Barcelona. The Catalans came up short in a hell of a group, with only the Europa League left to play in. It is interesting to note that Samir Handanovic has not played a single minute in the Champions League so far. In Europe, coach Simone Inzaghi preferred the second choice, with Andre Onana, who has also protected the Nerazzurri’s net in the last three Premier League games, in goal.
Teammates and friends
The slow adaptation of the 26-year-old Cameroonian to the number one position at Inter was a goal set by the Milanese professional management back in January, when it became clear that Onana would be coming to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. What all this means for Handanovic remains to be seen, of course. After all, he is already 38 years old, which means that sooner or later he will have to accept the role of reserve. If he stays at Inter…
For the now experienced Ljubljanaer, the role of mentor to his inappropriately younger colleague is clearly a good fit. Onana had many words of praise for Handanović. “We are teammates and friends. He is the captain and gives me advice all the time. I can’t say he is my role model, because he is a different type of goalkeeper. But the fact is that he is a leader and he is always ready to help,” praised Handanović, a former member of Ajax Amsterdam.
