This year’s edition of the elite Champions League continues at an accelerated pace. This year
Slovenian women
are competing in this elite competition in no less than four clubs. After a rather below-average first round for our girls, with only Lara Prašnikar and her Eintracht Frankfurt team winning, the second round of the group stage matches took place this week.
On Wednesday, the round opened with Mateja Zver and St. Pölten hosting one of the main favourites for the final victory, Lyon. The match started disastrously for Zverova and her teammates, with Lyon taking the lead in the fourth minute after a goal by Danielle van de Donk of the Netherlands. The injury of our experienced midfielder, Mateja Zver, caused even more bad mood in the camp of the reigning champions Austria. The latter had to leave after just over half an hour. Her teammates then offered good resistance to the French, but they still fell again. More precisely, they set the final score themselves, in 47. In the first minute, defender Leonarda Balog crashed into her own net. After two rounds played and two defeats, Zver and her teammates are currently tied for third (last) place with Slavia Prague.

Lara Prašnikar, daughter of the famous Bojan Prašnikar, was also at work on Wednesday. She and her Eintracht welcomed arguably the hottest women’s team in the world right on home turf. A chilly Frankfurt hosts the famous Barcelona, who are openly targeting the European title again this season. But hosting Germany was anything but easy. Prašnikarjeva and her teammates stole it from the reigning champions in 42. one minute in, when they surprisingly took the lead. Laura Freigang scored for the home team. But that didn’t bother the Catalans, who were within 15. minutes into the second half, they staged a complete turnaround for another sovereign victory. Salma Paralluelo scored twice and Mariona Caldentey once. Prašnikarjeva and her Frankfurt team are now in second place in Group A, which would take them to the quarter-finals.
Kaja Korošec and her teammates faced probably the toughest obstacle. Her Paris was hosted by
Chelsea
at the iconic Stamford Bridge stadium. Korosteva spent an hour on the field and then watched her team lose from the bench. The home team, who were considered the clear favourites, took the lead in 30. One minute in, Samantha Kerr scored the first of her three goals on the night. But the French didn’t give up and surprisingly levelled the scores eight minutes later. Thea Greboval was successful. In the second half, we watched Samantha Kerr’s show, who was 48th among the 48. and 55. She scored twice more in the next minute and quickly dashed the dreams of Kaja Korošec and her teammates for a surprise. The icing on the cake came from Sophie Ingle at the start of the judges’ supplement. Paris is in last place in Group D and is still without points. They are already four points behind second place, which means promotion at the end of the group stage.
The home match was played by the Roma team, of which Zara Kramžar is a member. The latter did not even find herself on the Roma bench in the second round, but this can be attributed to the fact that Alessandro Spugna relies on more experienced players in the Champions League, which unfortunately Kramžarjeva, at the age of 17, is not yet. Roma’s 3-0 win sees them jump to the top of the standings. Let’s recall that in the first round, they surprisingly took a point away from Bayern. Two players shone in yesterday’s match against Ajax. Valentina Giacinti was the top scorer with two goals, while Manuela Giugliano contributed the third. As mentioned before, Zara Kramžar was not in the squad for yesterday’s game, which was a tough one to play on home turf. Roma are now in first place in probably the toughest group, but are level on points with Bayern. (moss)
