The European School can often be very painful, admits Joao Henriques: “It’s completely different to play under such pressure”
Qarabag scored two goals on Thursday night in Ljubljana. Both also after mistakes by the home team.
Olimpija
forgot about the Colombian giant in the ranks of the Azerbaijani club in the first goal, and in the second one lost the ball in the danger zone and allowed the opponent to counterattack quickly, which led to the goal. Mistakes are, of course, a part of football, realises Olimpija coach Joao Henriques, who has also realised that he has a lot of inexperienced players at his disposal. And when that is the case, the European School can often be very painful.
“We need to do a better job of restraining our emotions and keeping our nerves calm, which we sometimes fail to do. Players are too eager to do everything without mistakes. We knew we were in danger of breaks from our central defenders, but it was Kevin Medina who scored. The boys were too hurt. Then, on the second goal, we made a mistake again and lost the ball. But it’s hard to make the right decisions all the time against such a rival,“, Joao Henriques told a press conference after the defeat in Stožice.
Joao Henriques: “We all make mistakes. Even me.”
The Portuguese expert, however, did not want to blame anyone for the defeat in the first match of the last qualifying round for the League Europa: “Playing under such pressure is completely different from what they are used to in the Slovenian league. It is normal for mistakes to happen. We will not point fingers at anyone, football is a collective effort. We all make mistakes. Me too. Qarabag too. Even when you are winning, you make a lot of mistakes during the game, but nobody talks about it then. Improving your team is not a matter of one or two months, it takes the whole season.”
